YouTube Hashtag Generator

You need fewer hashtags than you think. YouTube shows up to 3 by your title and ignores all of them past 60. Type your topics below to get clean, valid hashtags. Then read how many to use, and what breakout videos actually put in their descriptions.

Short answer

  • Use 3 to 15 hashtags. YouTube ignores them all past 60.
  • Put them in the description. YouTube shows up to 3 next to the title.
  • Mix broad and specific: #mealprep, then #indianmealprep.
  • No spaces, and nothing unrelated to the video.
  • Hashtags are not what makes a video break out. The title and the video are.

How many hashtags should a YouTube video have?

A YouTube video should have between 3 and 15 hashtags. Only up to 3 show by your title, so those are the ones viewers see. Past 60, YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video. Its hashtag help page also asks you not to add too many. The OutlierKit description tool keeps its own picks at 15 or fewer, and on our test run it stopped at 13.

Do breakout videos use hashtags?

Fewer than you would expect. On 7 November 2026, I pulled 500 breakout videos across 16 niches with OutlierKit. Each one got at least 5 times its channel's usual views. I could read the first part of the description for 271 of them. Only 17 of those showed a hashtag.

That count is a floor, not the real share. Hashtags often sit at the end of a description, past the part I could read. But it still says something. Most of these videos broke out on their title and their content, with hashtags out of sight or missing. The 17 that did show hashtags used a median of 6, and none used more than 12.

Hashtag examples from breakout videos

These four come from the same pull. Each set follows the same pattern: a broad hashtag for the topic, a few more specific ones, and one or two that name the exact niche or tool.

Look at the meal prep set. #MealPlanning and #HealthyEating are broad. #Desimealprep and #Desifood name the exact audience. The language set names the exact tools with #Sluka and #Lingq.

How to pick hashtags for a YouTube video

  1. Start with the topic. One or two broad hashtags people already use, like #budgeting or #languagelearning.
  2. Add the specific angle. Two to five that name what this video is really about, like #debtpayoffplan.
  3. Name the niche or tool. One or two exact ones, like #Sluka or #Desimealprep. A smaller hashtag page has fewer videos competing on it.
  4. Cut anything unrelated. YouTube does not allow hashtags that do not match the video.
  5. Format and check them with the free builder above, then paste them at the end of the description.

What are the best hashtags for YouTube Shorts?

The best hashtags for a Short name what that Short is about. No list of trending hashtags works for every Short, because a hashtag that does not match the video breaks YouTube's rules. Use the same broad-to-specific mix as long-form.

  • When you add text to a Short and type #, YouTube suggests hashtags based on your past uploads.
  • #shorts is optional. YouTube detects a Short from its vertical format and length.
  • Keep the Shorts title for the hook, and put the hashtags in the description.

YouTube hashtags vs tags: what is the difference?

Hashtags are visible. They show in the title or description and link to a page of videos with the same hashtag. Tags are a hidden field in YouTube Studio. YouTube's help page on video details says tags play a minimal role in discovery and mostly help with common misspellings. So spend your time on the title and the first lines of the description, then add a few hashtags.

Get hashtags written with your description in OutlierKit

The free builder formats topics you already have. The OutlierKit description tool writes the whole description and picks the hashtags in the same run. It writes the opening that shows in search separately from the rest, marks where the cut lands, and keeps the hashtags at 15 or fewer. On our test run about paying off $40,000 of student debt, it gave 3 hashtags for next to the title and 10 more for search. It writes from general rules, not from breakout data. It writes hashtags, not the hidden tags field.

Where this fits: the 4-step packaging and script loop

I ran one video idea through every packaging and script tool in OutlierKit on 6 November 2026. The idea was "How I paid off $40,000 of student debt in 18 months on a teacher's salary". Each step below shows what the app returned.

  1. Step 1

    Study a breakout

    Video Analysis, 10 credits

"How I Paid Off $70k In 18 Months" by David Why got 48,577 views on a 533-subscriber channel, 339 times its usual. First fix in the report: mention the $70k figure immediately.

    Study a breakout →
  2. Step 2

    Pick the title

    Title, 2 credits

Sixteen titles ranked against 12 real breakout videos. The top one scored 90: "How I Paid Off $40,000 of Student Debt in 18 Months as a Teacher".

    Pick the title →
  3. Step 3

    Fix the script before filming

    Script review, 10 credits

The draft scored 7.6 with a Hook of 5.0. The Blocker: it opened with a channel greeting instead of the debt-payoff result.

Fix the script before filming →
  4. Step 4 (this page)

    Finish the packaging

Description & hashtags, Chapters, 4 credits

A 142-character opening for the visible part of the description, 3 + 10 hashtags, and 3 chapters starting at 0:00.

Three tools reached the same verdict on their own: lead with the specific result. The whole loop fits inside the free trial, which is 30 credits on signup, no card, for 3 days.

YouTube hashtag FAQ

How many hashtags should I use on a YouTube video?+

Between 3 and 15 is plenty for most videos. YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video with more than 60, and it warns against adding too many. It shows up to 3 by your title. The breakout videos I checked on 7 November 2026 that used hashtags had a median of 6.

Where do hashtags show on YouTube?+

Up to 3 hashtags from your description show next to the video title. YouTube picks the ones it considers most engaging. All of them still show in the description, and each one links to a page of other videos with the same hashtag.

Should hashtags go in the title or the description?+

The description, in most cases. Hashtags work in both places, but in the title they use space your promise needs. YouTube already shows up to 3 description hashtags next to the title.

What are the best hashtags for YouTube Shorts?+

There is no single list that works for every Short. The best ones name the topic of that Short, from broad to specific, like #mealprep and #indianmealprep. When you add text to a Short and type #, YouTube suggests hashtags based on your past uploads. #shorts is optional, since YouTube detects a Short from its format.

Are YouTube hashtags the same as tags?+

No. Hashtags are visible and clickable in the title or description. Tags are a hidden field in YouTube Studio, and YouTube's own help page says tags play a minimal role in discovery. The OutlierKit description tool writes hashtags, not tags.

Do hashtags help a YouTube video get views?+

A little, by linking the video to a hashtag page and adding context. They are not what makes a video break out. Only 17 of the 271 breakout description snippets I could read showed a hashtag. The title, the thumbnail and whether people keep watching matter far more.

Is this YouTube hashtag generator free?+

Yes. The builder on this page is free, runs in your browser and needs no sign-up. It formats the topics you type into valid hashtags and checks them against YouTube's rules. To have hashtags picked for you with the description, the OutlierKit description tool does both in one run, free to try with 30 credits.
