What is the YouTube title character limit?
The YouTube title character limit is 100 characters. YouTube's help page says titles cannot be longer and cannot include invalid characters. In practice, YouTube Studio rejects the < and > characters. The limit is the same for long-form videos and Shorts. Descriptions get 5,000 characters, on the same help page.
How many characters of a YouTube title actually show?
Fewer than 100, and the number changes with the screen. YouTube does not publish a fixed cut-off. On a phone, a title wraps to two lines in the home feed and in search. Past that, it gets cut. The list of suggested videos next to a video has less room. That is why about 60 characters is the common guideline, and why the first 40 matter most.
- Phone home feed and search: two lines, so roughly 60 characters is safe.
- Suggested list: narrower, so the first 40 or so carry the title.
- Shorts player: the title sits over the video and gets cut short.
Treat these as guidelines. Paste your title into the free title checker to see a phone preview before you publish.
How long are the titles of videos that broke out?
The median breakout title is 55 characters long. On 7 November 2026, I ran an OutlierKit outlier search in 16 niches, from personal finance and coaching to coding, cooking and language learning. Each video got at least 5 times its channel's usual views. The median was 11 times. After removing duplicates, 473 titles were left.
| Title length | Share of breakout titles |
|---|---|
| 40 characters or fewer | 24% |
| 50 characters or fewer | 41% |
| 60 characters or fewer | 58% |
| 70 characters or fewer | 73% |
| Over 70 characters | 27% |
| Over 100 characters | 0% (YouTube does not allow it) |
So 58% fit in 60 characters, and 27% went past 70 and still broke out. A short title is not a rule for success. A long title is not a reason a video failed.
What else do breakout titles have in common?
Fewer tricks than most advice suggests. Here is what the same 473 titles look like.
| Pattern | Breakout titles |
|---|---|
| Median length | 55 characters, 9 words |
| Middle half of titles | 41 to 73 characters |
| Contains a number | 29% |
| Number in the first 40 characters | 20% |
| Two-part title (with | or :) | 32% |
| Mostly capital letters | 3% |
| Contains an emoji | 12% |
| Ends with a question mark | 3% |
- Most have no number. 71% broke out without one. A number helps when it is a real result, not a padded list count.
- Shouting is rare. Only 3% are mostly capital letters. One stressed word, like "ACTUALLY", is more common.
- Two-part titles are common. About 1 in 3 uses a | or a colon. The first part carries the idea, and the second adds detail that can be cut.
Breakout title examples, from 32 to 70 characters
These six come from the same pull. All of them are from small or mid-size channels, so the title and the idea did the work, not the subscriber count.
| Title | Chars | Channel (subscribers) | Views |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Harsh Truth about Consulting | 32 | Jacky Ye (3.5K) | 80K |
| How To ACTUALLY Get Good At Programming | 39 | NovaLabs (2.2K) | 216K |
| How I Meal Prep to Save 15+ Hours a Week | 40 | My Inspired Home (10.5K) | 92K |
| Coaching Over 1000 Business Owners Taught Me This | 49 | Will Barron (18.1K) | 73K |
| Why Your Photo Editing Doesn't Look Cinematic (Do This Instead) | 63 | Kosta Bratsos (20.3K) | 141K |
| Exactly How I Built A $500k Per Year (Profit) Solo Consulting Business | 70 | Frederik Pahuus (11K) | 99K |
Views and subscribers as of 7 November 2026.
Look at the two longest. "Why Your Photo Editing Doesn't Look Cinematic" makes its promise in 45 characters, and "(Do This Instead)" is extra. "Exactly How I Built A $500k Per Year" puts the result in the first 36. Cut either one on a phone and the idea still shows.
Why the first 40 characters matter more than the total
The first 40 characters show on almost every screen. So that is where the promise has to be. YouTube does not push a video to many times its channel's usual views on clicks alone. People clicked and kept watching. A title that makes its promise early, and a video that keeps it, is what those breakouts share.
- Write the title with the result or the question first.
- Read only the first 40 characters. If they do not say what the video is about, rewrite.
- Move labels, episode numbers and the series name to the end.
- Keep the search phrase people type inside those 40 characters too.
How long should a YouTube Shorts title be?
Keep the useful part of a Shorts title under about 40 characters. The title sits over the video in the Shorts player and gets cut. People decide in the first second of the video, so the title only needs to name the hook. My pull had only 6 Shorts with a known length, too few for a fair median, so this is a guideline and not a measured number.
- Lead with the result or the question: "When should I start investing?" is 30 characters.
- Skip #shorts in the title. YouTube detects a Short from the format.
- Say the title's promise out loud in the first second of the video.
YouTube title best practices for 2026
- Stay under 100 characters. It is the hard limit.
- Aim for about 60. The median breakout title is 55.
- Put the point in the first 40. That part shows everywhere.
- Use a number only if it is real. 29% of breakouts had one.
- Skip all caps and emoji clutter. Only 3% of breakouts were mostly capitals.
- Keep hashtags in the description. YouTube shows up to 3 of them next to the title.
- Copy the angle, not the words. Read the titles of breakout videos near your topic in the Outlier Finder before you write yours.

How I measured these titles
On 7 November 2026 I ran 16 OutlierKit outlier searches, one per niche, for videos with at least 5 times their channel's usual views. That gave 500 videos. I removed repeated titles, including a few repeat uploads from spam-like channels, which left 473. Length is the number of characters in the title as YouTube shows it. A few non-English channels had translated titles. The results show what breakout titles look like. They do not prove that a given length causes views.
Where this fits: the 4-step packaging and script loop
I ran one video idea through every packaging and script tool in OutlierKit on 6 November 2026. The idea was "How I paid off $40,000 of student debt in 18 months on a teacher's salary". Each step below shows what the app returned.
Step 1
Study a breakout
Video Analysis, 10 credits
"How I Paid Off $70k In 18 Months" by David Why got 48,577 views on a 533-subscriber channel, 339 times its usual. First fix in the report: mention the $70k figure immediately.
Study a breakout →Step 2 (this page)
Pick the title
Title, 2 credits
Sixteen titles ranked against 12 real breakout videos. The top one scored 90: "How I Paid Off $40,000 of Student Debt in 18 Months as a Teacher".
Step 3
Fix the script before filming
Script review, 10 credits
The draft scored 7.6 with a Hook of 5.0. The Blocker: it opened with a channel greeting instead of the debt-payoff result.
Fix the script before filming →Step 4
Finish the packaging
Description & hashtags, Chapters, 4 credits
A 142-character opening for the visible part of the description, 3 + 10 hashtags, and 3 chapters starting at 0:00.
Finish the packaging →
Three tools reached the same verdict on their own: lead with the specific result. The whole loop fits inside the free trial, which is 30 credits on signup, no card, for 3 days.
YouTube title length FAQ
What is the character limit for a YouTube title?+
100 characters. YouTube's help page says video titles have a limit of 100 characters and cannot include invalid characters. YouTube Studio will not save a longer title.
How long should a YouTube title be?+
Aim for about 60 characters, and put the point in the first 40. In 473 breakout titles I measured on 7 November 2026, the median was 55 characters and 58% fit in 60. Longer titles also broke out, so the front of the title matters more than the total.
How many characters of a YouTube title show?+
It depends on the screen. YouTube does not publish a fixed number. On phones, titles usually wrap to two lines and longer ones get cut, which is why about 60 characters is the common guideline. The suggested list next to a video shows less. Check yours with a phone preview before you publish.
How long should a YouTube Shorts title be?+
Keep the useful part under about 40 characters. The title sits over the video in the Shorts player and gets cut short, and people decide on the first second of the video, not the title. My pull had too few Shorts to give a fair median, so this is a guideline, not a measured number.
Is a long YouTube title bad for SEO?+
Not by itself. YouTube reads the whole title, up to 100 characters. The risk is that viewers never see the end. So put the search phrase and the result early, and let the rest add detail.
Should I put numbers in my YouTube title?+
Only when you have an honest one. 29% of the breakout titles I measured had a number. A real amount or time ("$40,000", "18 months") makes a promise concrete. A made-up list count does not help.
Can I check my title length for free?+
Yes. The free OutlierKit title checker counts characters, shows a phone preview, and flags a buried number or a label at the start. It runs in your browser with no sign-up.
