YouTube Views vs Engaged Views: What the 2026 View Count Change Means
Since August 24, 2026, a YouTube view counts from the first frame on every format. What used to be called a view is now an engaged view.
The public number under your video got bigger and means less. The number that tracks real watching still exists, under a new name, and YouTube still uses it for earnings and analytics. So the practical question is which number to use for which job. This page answers that. The change is one entry in our log of every YouTube algorithm update in 2026.
What changed about YouTube view counts in 2026?
YouTube changed the definition of a view on August 24, 2026. A view now counts from the first frame, with no minimum watch time, on every format. YouTube's blog post of August 19, 2026 puts it this way:
“This is the new, standardized, consistent definition of a view. And the previous definition of a view will now be called an ‘engaged view.’”
TeamYouTube announced it two days earlier and gave the reason: brand deals.
Starting 8/24, views will count the moment a video begins to play (w/ no minimum watch time) across all formats (VOD, Shorts, & Live). We're standardizing views to reflect creators' true exposure across YouTube, making it easier to show their value to brand partners. This update won't impact creator earnings or YPP eligibility.

Shorts already worked this way. YouTube switched Shorts to first-play counting in March 2025. The August 2026 change brought long-form, podcasts and live in line.
What is the difference between a view and an engaged view?
A view is any play that reaches the first frame. An engaged view is a play the viewer chose: they clicked, or they kept watching past the initial seconds. The table follows the six cases in YouTube's blog post.
| What happens | Thumbnail impression | View | Engaged view |
|---|---|---|---|
| A thumbnail appears and the viewer scrolls past | Yes | No | No |
| The viewer hovers and the video starts to autoplay | Yes | Yes | No |
| The autoplay keeps running past the first seconds | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| A Short starts to play in the Shorts feed | No thumbnail shown | Yes | No |
| The Short keeps playing past the first seconds | No thumbnail shown | Yes | Yes |
| The viewer clicks or taps and starts to watch | Yes | Yes | Yes |
YouTube does not say how many seconds “the initial seconds” are. Its Shorts lead explained why in 2023: the threshold changes by surface, and YouTube does not want people to game it. That is covered in how the Shorts algorithm works.
What did the view count change not affect?
The change affects the public counter and nothing behind it. YouTube names five things that stay the same:
- Earnings. TeamYouTube says the update will not affect them.
- Partner Program eligibility. It is based on qualified views and watch hours.
- Click-through rate, average view duration and retention. YouTube says they are still anchored on engaged views.
- Recommendations. YouTube says there is no change to the algorithm.
- How a click or tap is counted.
In the blog post's words: “there's no change to recommendations … and no change to the YouTube Partner Program, that's based on qualified views.” The Partner Program does change in 2027 for other reasons. See the Partner Program changes for 2027.
Which number should you use: views or engaged views?
Use engaged views for anything about your own performance, and treat public views as a measure of exposure. Five common jobs:
| Job | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Comparing your own videos over time | Engaged views | It is the same count before and after August 24, so old and new videos line up. |
| Reading CTR, retention and watch time | Engaged views | YouTube says these metrics are still built on engaged views. |
| Tracking Partner Program progress | Qualified views and watch hours | Eligibility never used the public counter. |
| A sponsor deck or media kit | Both, labelled | Views show exposure. Engaged views show people who chose to watch. Say which is which. |
| Researching other channels | Public views, compared within the same months | You can only see the public count. Compare a video with that channel's other uploads from the same period. |
Can you compare views from before and after August 24, 2026?
Not on the public counter. YouTube says views are counted from the first frame “going forward”, so a video published in September 2026 collects views under a looser rule than one published in June. A higher public number on the newer video does not mean more people watched it.
On your own channel the fix is easy: switch the comparison to engaged views. On other channels you cannot, because only the public count is visible. Two habits keep competitor research honest:
- Compare a video with the same channel's other uploads from the same months, not with its older catalog.
- Look at the ratio, not the raw number. A video with five times the channel's usual views is a breakout under either counting rule.
That ratio is what an outlier is. The method is in how to find outlier videos, and I build OutlierKit to run that comparison across a niche, so the topics you pick come from what viewers chose and not from a counter that changed its rules.
Did the change make views go up or down?
Up, on the public counter. Plays that start by autoplay or in a feed and end a moment later were not views before. Now they are. YouTube has published no figure for how much counts rise.
If your views fell after August 24, the counting change is not the cause. Work through the six causes of a drop in YouTube views.
Frequently asked questions
What is an engaged view on YouTube?
An engaged view is what YouTube used to call a view. YouTube defines it as clicking to watch or watching past the initial seconds. It is the count used to qualify for earnings, and click-through rate, average view duration and retention are still based on it.
What counts as a view on YouTube now?
Since August 24, 2026, a view counts from the very first frame on every format: long-form, Shorts, podcasts and live. A Short that starts to play in the feed is a view. A long-form video that starts to autoplay on the Home page is a view.
Does the view count change affect YouTube earnings?
No. YouTube says the change does not affect creator earnings or YouTube Partner Program eligibility. Qualifying to earn is still based on engaged views.
Did the view count change affect the YouTube algorithm?
No. YouTube's blog post says there is no change to recommendations. It also says the way click-through rate, average view duration and retention are calculated has not changed.
Why did my YouTube views go up after August 24, 2026?
Views that start by autoplay or in a feed now count from the first frame, even if the viewer leaves a moment later. Those plays were not counted before. Your engaged views show whether real watching changed.
Where do I find engaged views in YouTube Studio?
Engaged views appear in YouTube Analytics. YouTube says the vast majority of its analytics are still anchored on engaged views, so click-through rate, average view duration and retention already use them.
