Why Are My YouTube Views Down? Check These Six Causes in Order
Most drops in YouTube views are not an algorithm change. Check six causes in this order: the counting change, a faded spike, the season, one traffic source, a shift in your niche, and the videos themselves.
The order matters. The first three causes mean nothing is wrong, and each takes two minutes to rule out. Only the last three need you to change something. When large channels reported drops in 2025, YouTube checked its systems and published its own list of reasons. This page builds on that list and on the two confirmed changes from 2026. Every dated change is in our log of YouTube algorithm updates.
What does YouTube say causes a drop in views?
YouTube names four reasons: a return to baseline, seasonal viewing habits, ad blockers, and competition on the platform. Rob from TeamYouTube listed them in a YouTube Help community post on September 15, 2025, after many large channels reported falling views.
“There are many reasons that individual channels may see view fluctuations, but there is no systemic issue that is impacting creators.”
That statement is from 2025. Since then two confirmed changes can move a channel's numbers: the view count change of August 24, 2026 and the Shorts originality change of October 1, 2026. Both are in the list below.
What are the six causes of a drop in YouTube views?
Work down the list and stop at the first cause that fits. Each one has a check you can run in YouTube Studio.
You are comparing two different counts
Check: Compare engaged views, not views, across the dates.
Since August 24, 2026, a public view counts from the first frame. Videos published before and after that date are counted under different rules. If you compare them on views, the numbers will not line up in either direction.
Switch the comparison to engaged views in YouTube Studio. If engaged views are steady, nothing dropped. If engaged views fell, go to cause two.
More on this: views versus engaged views.
You are coming down from a spike
Check: Compare the last 28 days with the same period three months ago, not with last month.
One breakout video lifts every number on a channel for weeks. When it fades, the chart looks like a fall. YouTube lists this first among the reasons for a drop and calls it a return to the baseline.
“It's unhealthy for creators to always just aim for the high water mark of their channels, because different content does have different appeal. If you're experimenting in a new area, it may take a while for audiences to warm up to you in that area.”
It is the season
Check: Compare with the same weeks last year.
YouTube says viewership shifts every year, "especially around August as summer ends". School terms, holidays and sports calendars move whole niches up and down. A drop that matches last year's shape is the calendar.
One traffic source fell, not the channel
Check: Open Reach, then Traffic source, and find the one line that fell.
A drop is almost never even across sources. Find the source that fell and you have the cause. A fall in Shorts feed traffic on a clip channel points to the October 1, 2026 change, which cut reach for channels that mostly re-upload other creators' videos. A fall in search points to one ranking or one topic. A fall in external traffic points to a site or post that stopped sending viewers.
YouTube also names ad blockers. It says they "can impact the accuracy of reported view counts", and that channels whose audiences use them more may see more swings.

Your audience moved to another topic or format
Check: Look at what broke out on other channels in your niche in the last 90 days.
YouTube's fourth reason is competition: viewers "could be watching other videos, channels, and topics on YouTube". Your videos can be as good as before and still lose, because the audience's interest moved.
The way to see it is to look outside your channel. Find the videos in your niche that got several times their channel's usual views in the last three months. If they share a topic or a format you are not making, that is where the views went.
More on this: how to find outlier videos in your niche.
The recent videos are weaker
Check: Compare impressions, click-through rate and retention on your last five videos with the five before.
If the first five causes are clear, look at the videos. Lower impressions with a steady click rate means the topics have less demand. A lower click rate means the titles and thumbnails are not landing. Lower retention means the videos are not keeping their promise.

Which cause matches what you see in YouTube Studio?
Match the pattern in Studio to a cause. Seven common patterns:
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Views fell, engaged views steady | Counting change | Nothing to fix. Compare on engaged views from now on. |
| Views fell after one big video faded | Return to baseline | Compare with three months ago. |
| Same dip as this time last year | Season | Plan for it. Keep publishing. |
| Only Shorts feed traffic fell | Shorts originality change, if you post other creators' clips | Add your own commentary, edit or story. |
| Impressions fell across new uploads | Topic demand moved | Check the niche's recent breakouts. |
| Impressions steady, click rate fell | Titles and thumbnails | Rework packaging on the next three videos. |
| Clicks steady, retention fell | The videos | Find where viewers leave and fix the format. |
One caution on click rate. A video that reaches a wider audience shows a lower click rate than one seen only by core fans. YouTube says so directly:
“The more impressions something gets, the broader the audience is reached, and that tends to make those aggregates look lower than if you're only targeting just the core fans.”
Is your YouTube channel shadowbanned?
Almost certainly not. YouTube does not use the term, and a real restriction is visible. Check three places in YouTube Studio:
- The channel dashboard, for a policy notice or a strike.
- The Restrictions column in the Content list, for a copyright claim or an age restriction.
- The Monetization column in the Content list, for limited ads.
If all three are clear, the cause is one of the six above.
When large channels suspected Restricted Mode in 2025, YouTube answered that it “represents only a small fraction of the daily views on YouTube” and “is not causing a drop in views.”
What should you do when the cause is your niche?
Find out where the audience went, then make your version of it. Cause five is the hardest to see from inside your own analytics, because Studio only shows your channel. Three steps:
- List ten channels your viewers also watch.
- For each, find the uploads from the last 90 days that got several times the channel's usual views.
- Write down the topic and format of each. A topic that shows up on three or more channels is where the demand is.
That takes an afternoon by hand. I build OutlierKit to do it in one search, so your next video starts from a topic the audience is choosing now. The manual method is in how to find outlier videos, and the patterns to look for are in what outlier videos have in common.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my YouTube views suddenly down?
The six most common causes, in the order to check them: you are comparing views counted under two different rules, you are coming down from a spike, it is a seasonal dip, one traffic source fell, your audience moved to another topic, or your recent videos are weaker. YouTube lists a return to baseline, seasonal habits, ad blockers and competition as the usual reasons.
Did YouTube change the algorithm and cut everyone's views in 2026?
YouTube has confirmed no system-wide view drop in 2026. Two confirmed changes can lower a specific channel's numbers: public views count differently since August 24, 2026, and since October 1, 2026 Shorts from channels that mostly re-upload other creators' videos get less reach.
Is my YouTube channel shadowbanned?
YouTube does not use the term. In September 2025, after many reports of drops, it checked and said its viewership systems were working correctly and there was no systemic issue. Real restrictions show up in YouTube Studio as a policy notice, a strike or an age or ad limit on a video. Check there first.
How long does it take for YouTube views to recover?
There is no fixed time. YouTube says it does not judge a video on its first moments, and that many videos get most of their views a month or more after upload. A channel recovers when new videos land with the audience, not after a waiting period.
Do ad blockers lower my YouTube view count?
They can. YouTube says ad blockers and other content blocking tools can affect the accuracy of reported view counts, and that channels whose audiences use them more may see more fluctuation.
Should I delete videos that got low views?
No. YouTube says it ranks each video for each viewer, and that many videos get most of their views a month or more after upload. YouTube's Shorts lead has also advised against deleting and reposting, because it risks being read as spam.
Sources and method
YouTube's four reasons come from its September 2025 post. The order of the six causes and the table of patterns are my method, not YouTube's. The order runs from the fastest check to the slowest.
