YouTube Built Its Own Outlier Finder Into Studio. Here Is What It Still Can't Show You.
TL;DR. YouTube is testing a Research tab in YouTube Studio that shows other channels' videos with an outlier multiplier, plus a filter for videos your own viewers already watch. It is the strongest signal yet that outlier research is how YouTube itself thinks about ideation. It is also a mirror of your current audience, not a map of your niche, and it is with a small test group with no rollout date.
I build OutlierKit, so I read the announcement twice. Once as a founder whose product does this job, and once as someone who wants creators to find their next winning format faster. Both readings land in the same place. YouTube just told every creator that the multiplier matters more than the view count. What it did not give them is the part of the research that happens before your viewers have already made up their minds. Below is what shipped, what it implies, and a live data pull that shows exactly where the blind spot sits.
What YouTube Actually Shipped in the Research Tab
The Research tab is a video ideation surface inside YouTube Studio that lists videos from other channels with public stats and an outlier multiplier. Tubefilter's James Hale reported it on August 5, 2026, after Mario Joos, who works on retention for creators including MrBeast, posted screenshots. A YouTube spokesperson confirmed the experiment to Tubefilter and said it is with "a small number of users".
| Detail | What is known (as of September 9, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Where it lives | A new Research tab inside YouTube Studio |
| Status | An experiment with 'a small number of users', per a YouTube spokesperson |
| Wider rollout | No information available, per the same spokesperson |
| What it lists | Videos from other channels with subscriber count, upload date, and view count |
| The score | An outlier multiplier per video. Screenshots ran from 4x to 132x |
| The filter that matters | 'Watched by my viewers': only videos your existing audience watches in volume |
| First reported by | Mario Joos, a retention consultant for creators including MrBeast, via Tubefilter on August 5, 2026 |
Joos was blunt about the earlier attempt. The Inspiration tab, which generated AI idea cards, was something he and his creators "haven't found very useful". YouTube seems to agree. Its own help page for the Inspiration tab now says it is "gradually deprecating" that tab from August 2026 and points creators to Ask Studio instead. SocialBee's running YouTube updates log noted in July that the Trends tab was evolving into Research.
So the sequence is: generated ideas were retired, and outlier data took their place. That is the tell. Read alongside our breakdown of what Ask Studio can and cannot see, YouTube now has one surface for your own analytics and one for other people's outliers. Neither looks across a niche.
What YouTube's Research Tab Implies for Creators
Three things follow from YouTube building this, and only the third one is bad news for anyone.
1. Outlier research is now the official method
For years, judging a video against its channel's baseline was a third-party idea. 1of10 built a business on it. vidIQ added an Outliers feature. We built OutlierKit around it. YouTube putting a multiplier next to every video in Studio settles the argument about whether the metric is legitimate. If you have been explaining to a client or a co-founder why a 12x video on a small channel matters more than a 2x video on a big one, YouTube just made that case for you. Our guide to how to find outlier videos covers the method in full.
2. The multiplier beats the view count
The screenshots showed multipliers from 4x to 132x, and that range is the point. A 132x video on a channel with 8,000 subscribers is a format signal. A 2 million view video on a channel that averages 2 million is a Tuesday. The demand for this way of thinking already exists. On September 9, 2026 I ran a keyword pull through the OutlierKit API and the phrase has gone mainstream:
| Search term | Monthly searches (pulled September 9, 2026) |
|---|---|
| youtube outlier | 4,792 |
| youtube outlier videos | 3,255 |
| find outlier youtube videos | 2,683 |
| youtube outlier video finder | 2,576 |
| youtube video outlier extension | 2,326 |
| youtube research tab | 22 |
"YouTube outlier" alone draws 4,792 searches a month. "YouTube research tab" draws 22. People are searching for the method, not the feature, and YouTube built the feature to meet the method.
3. The one filter nobody else can build
"Watched by my viewers" is real, and it is YouTube-only. Joos called it the place where "YouTube wins over any other tool", and on that narrow point he is right. YouTube holds your viewers' private watch history. No third-party tool does, OutlierKit included, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What I will do is show you what that filter cannot see, because that is the part that decides whether your next video grows the channel or just serves the people who already subscribed.
The Blind Spot: A Mirror of Your Audience Is Not a Map of Your Niche
"Watched by my viewers" shows you what the audience you already have is already watching. That is useful for keeping them. It is a weak signal for growing past them, because growth comes from formats that pull in viewers you do not have yet. Those formats show up first on channels your audience has not opened, and often on channels too small to register in anyone's watch history.
Here is what that looks like with real numbers. On September 9, 2026 I took a mid-size personal finance channel, Michela Allocca (89,700 subscribers, 11,041 average views per video), and ran a similar-channel scan through the OutlierKit API with results ranked by size proximity. Then I pulled each peer's biggest outlier at 3x or above.
| Size-matched peer | Subscribers | Biggest outlier | Views | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JP Finance | 92,100 | America Is Entering a Financial Crisis... (Get Ready) | 337,272 | 20.6x |
| Shay Budgets | 95,200 | I've Been Keeping a Secret... Life Update | 20,772 | 11.9x |
| Zoe Pritchard | 73,400 | my savings goals at 29 years old | 34,000 | 5.6x |
| Personal Finance with Leila | 66,300 | people share their latest net worths | 98,427 | 15.7x |
| True Wealth with Amy Wang | 48,900 | 12 little luxuries that cost $0 | 186,194 | 41.6x |
| Devamsha | 39,400 | If I Started Social Media While Working Full-Time, I'd Do This | 312,371 | 24.3x |
| Slow Stack Society | 34,600 | How to DESTROY Your 20s (Tier List) | 565,000 | 84.8x |
Read the bottom of that table. The biggest multiplier in the set, 84.8x, came from the smallest channel, Slow Stack Society at 34,600 subscribers, with a tier-list format that pulled 565,000 views. The second biggest, 41.6x, came from True Wealth with Amy Wang at 48,900 subscribers. The two largest peers, JP Finance and Shay Budgets, posted 20.6x and 11.9x.
Now picture the "watched by my viewers" filter on the seed channel. It will surface JP Finance, because a 92,100 subscriber finance channel overlaps a lot of the same audience. It is far less likely to surface a 34,600 subscriber channel whose tier-list video is still travelling. That is the video the seed channel needs to see, and it is the one the mirror hides.
The pattern across niches
A second pull the same day, for "home workout for beginners no equipment", returned 15 outliers at 3x or above from channels ranging from 115 subscribers to 347,000. One of them, Fitfox Official at 196 subscribers, had a video at 51,943 views and 9.8x. Eight of the 15 were repeat live streams from two related channels, which is a reminder that a raw outlier list still needs a human to read it. The point stands: the tiny channels carrying new formats do not appear in any audience's watch history until the format has already spread.
The Second Problem: Everyone in the Tab Sees the Same List
When the Research tab reaches every creator, every creator in your niche gets the same outlier list filtered by overlapping audiences. Two channels with similar viewers get near-identical results. The formats it surfaces stop being an edge on the day the tab goes wide, because the edge was never the multiplier. It was seeing the multiplier before your competitors did.
That is what YouTube's head of discovery described, from the other side, in his explanation of how recommendations work: the system builds a feed per viewer, and it rewards videos that satisfy people who have not seen that format yet. A niche where everyone chases last month's outliers is a niche where nobody is making next month's.
There is also a plainer risk. YouTube has retired the Inspiration tab within about a year of expanding it worldwide, and the Research tab is an experiment with no rollout date. Building your ideation process on a Studio surface that may change or vanish is a bet on YouTube's product roadmap, not on your research. Our log of YouTube algorithm and Studio changes has a long list of features that came and went.
What to Do Before the Research Tab Reaches You
The work that makes the Research tab useful happens before you open it. Here is the routine I would run this week, whether or not you are in the test group. It uses OutlierKit (the tool I build) because that is what I can show with dated data, but the logic holds for any tool that can search a niche rather than one audience.
- 1
Start from the niche, not from your subscribers
Run a topic search across the whole index and sort by multiplier. You want the formats that beat a channel's own baseline, from channels of every size. In the fitness pull above, that range ran from 115 subscribers to 347,000. None of the small ones will ever show up in a filter built on what your viewers already watch.
- 2
Scan your size-matched peers
Pull the channels most similar to yours and rank them by size proximity. A format that took a 34,600 subscriber channel to 565,000 views is a format you can copy at your scale. A format that took a 5 million subscriber channel to 20 million views may not be.
- 3
Check whether anyone is searching for it
Outlier multipliers tell you a format travelled. Keyword volume tells you whether the topic has standing demand. Both together separate a one-off from a lane. A 40x video on a topic with no search volume is a browse hit that will not repeat on schedule.
- 4
Then open the Research tab, if you have it
Use the 'watched by my viewers' filter as the last check, not the first. If a format that won across the niche also shows up in what your audience already watches, you have both signals. If it does not, you may have found the thing your competitors have not seen yet, which is the whole point.
If you want the weekly version of this with a worked example, the 15-minute niche trend routine walks through six meditation channels step by step. And if you run this in Claude rather than a browser, the OutlierKit MCP server exposes the same searches as tools.
YouTube Research Tab vs OutlierKit vs 1of10 vs vidIQ
The Research tab wins one row outright and loses most of the others, because it was built to answer a different question. Prices are US list prices as of August 2026; the review pages for 1of10 and vidIQ carry the linked sources and ratings.
| Question | YouTube Research tab | OutlierKit | 1of10 | vidIQ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outlier multiplier per video | Yes | Yes, three ratios per video | Yes | Yes (Outliers feature) |
| What your existing viewers watch | Yes, and only here | No | No | No |
| Search a whole niche by topic | Not reported | Yes, semantic search across the index | Yes, keyword search | Yes, within the suite |
| Similar channels matched by size | No | Yes, with a size score | Partly, via channel search | Partly, via competitors list |
| Keyword search volumes | No | Yes | No | Yes |
| API and MCP access | No | Yes, on Pro and Max | No public API | MCP on paid plans |
| Who can use it today | A small test group | Anyone, free trial with 10 credits | Anyone, free plan | Anyone, free plan |
| Price | Free | $29 Hobby, $49 Pro, $199 Max | $29 Basic, $69 Pro | $19 Boost, $49 Max |
OutlierKit is rated 4.9/5 on Product Hunt. The full head-to-heads are on OutlierKit vs 1of10 and OutlierKit vs vidIQ. My honest verdict: if the Research tab reaches you, use it, and use it last. Let the niche scan tell you what is winning, let your peers tell you what wins at your size, and let YouTube's filter tell you which of those your audience is already leaning toward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the YouTube Studio Research tab?
The Research tab is a new video ideation section inside YouTube Studio. It lists videos from other channels with their subscriber count, upload date, view count, and an outlier multiplier that scores each video against the channel's usual performance. A 'watched by my viewers' filter narrows the list to videos your existing audience watches in volume. Tubefilter reported it on August 5, 2026 as an experiment with a small number of users.
Who has access to the YouTube Research tab?
A small test group. A YouTube spokesperson told Tubefilter the tab is an experiment with 'a small number of users' and that there is no information yet on a wider rollout. If you do not see it in YouTube Studio, you are not in the test.
What does the outlier multiplier in YouTube Studio mean?
It is how many times a video outperformed the channel's normal results. A 10x video pulled ten times the views the channel usually gets. Screenshots of the tab showed multipliers from 4x to 132x. It is the same idea third-party outlier tools have used for years: judge a video against its own channel's baseline, not against raw view counts.
What does 'watched by my viewers' do?
It filters the outlier list down to videos that your existing audience already watches in significant numbers. YouTube can do this because it holds the private watch history of your viewers. No third-party tool has that data, which is why this filter is the tab's one unique feature.
Is the Research tab the same as the Inspiration tab?
No. The Inspiration tab generated AI idea cards and is being retired. YouTube's own help page says it is gradually deprecating the Inspiration tab from August 2026 and points creators to Ask Studio. The Research tab is a different surface built on outlier data rather than generated suggestions.
Does the YouTube Research tab replace outlier tools like OutlierKit, 1of10, or vidIQ?
Not for niche research. The tab is bound to one channel's audience and, so far, to a small test group. It does not search a whole niche by topic, rank similar channels by size, or return keyword volumes, and it has no API. What it does that nobody else can is show what your viewers already watch. Treat it as a final check on ideas you found by scanning the niche, not as the scan itself.
Why does 'watched by my viewers' have a blind spot?
Because it is a mirror of your current audience. It shows you what the people you already have are already watching. The formats that grow a channel usually come from adjacent audiences it has not reached yet, and from channels too small to register in anyone's watch history. In the finance pull on this page, the biggest multiplier, 84.8x, came from a 34,600 subscriber channel.
What should I do before the Research tab reaches my channel?
Run the research YouTube's tab cannot: a topic search across the niche sorted by multiplier, a size-matched similar-channel scan, and a keyword volume check on the formats that surface. That gives you a shortlist grounded in the whole niche. When the tab arrives, use its viewer filter to confirm which of those ideas your audience is already leaning toward.
