What does a channel watchlist reveal about trends in my niche?
This is the second half of the trends question from our live session on 4 September 2026. The first half covered the weekly routine. This half is about the tool that makes the routine fast: a watchlist of channels like yours. To show how it works, we built one for budget travel during the session and it surfaced two phrases sitting behind a 200x video and a 54x video.
Short answer
A watchlist is a list of 20 to 30 channels that are like yours. When the same words show up in the best videos of several channels on the list, that is a trend you can use before everyone else sees it.
The rule of thumb: a phrase on one channel is a habit, on two is a coincidence, on three or more is a trend. Put one of those phrases in your next title, applied to your own topic.
Why a watchlist beats watching one competitor
Watching one competitor tells you what one person decided to make. Watching twenty channels your size tells you what the audience is rewarding, because the same viewers are choosing between all of them. When a phrase starts appearing across the list, it is not because twenty creators had the same idea. It is because the ones who tried it got more views, and the others noticed. You are reading the audience through the channels.
Size matching matters here. A million-subscriber channel gets views on any title, so its titles carry little signal. Channels near your size only win when strangers click, which means their best titles are the ones strangers wanted. That is the signal you are after.
How to build a watchlist
- In OutlierKit, open the similar-channels tool and enter your channel. Turn on size matching so you get channels about your size, not giants. If you do not have a channel yet, enter a channel you would like to be like in a year.
- You get a list of channels with each one's best videos. Read the titles of the best videos side by side. Do not watch the videos yet. Titles are the promise; the promise is what you are comparing.
- Write down any phrase that appears on three or more channels. Those phrases are what viewers in your niche are clicking on right now. Ignore phrases that only one channel uses, however well that one video did.
- Put one of those phrases in your next title, applied to your own topic. Then re-read the list next week. Phrases that stay for a month are safe to build a series on. Phrases that vanish were a spike.
If you would rather keep the list in a spreadsheet, the competitor analysis template has a channel-by-channel layout that works for this, and the monitoring tools roundup covers tools that alert you when a watched channel posts.
What the example shows: an 8-channel travel watchlist

During the session we built a list of 8 travel channels similar to Price of Travel, all between 8,000 and 56,000 subscribers. Two phrases kept repeating in their best videos: "real costs" and "biggest mistake".
The first video above, from Vivid Travels (10,000 subscribers), is about a cheaper way to find flights. It got 153,000 views, which is 200 times the channel's normal. The second, from Alp Galip Travels (30,000 subscribers), is an Iceland guide with "Real Costs" in the title, and it got 65,000 views, 54 times normal. Both phrases describe a promise, not a place. That is why the same phrases work in any niche: the real costs of starting pottery, the biggest mistake new meditators make.
Four more travel outliers built on the same two phrases
The two phrases the watchlist surfaced were real costs and biggest mistake. On 7 September 2026 I searched the OutlierKit index for travel videos built on money and mistakes, and four more small channels had won with them.

What to read for, beyond phrases
- Title shapes. Numbers, named things, claims against expectation. If most of the list's best titles share a shape, use that shape. The post on what outlier videos have in common breaks the three shapes down.
- Formats. Guides, lists, quizzes, talk-downs. A format that appears in the best videos of several channels is a format the audience has accepted.
- Gaps. A phrase that is being searched a lot but appears on none of the list's best videos is a content gap, which is the other thing a watchlist is good for.
Words used on this page
- Watchlist
- A list of 20 to 30 channels like yours, read weekly for repeating title phrases.
- Size matching
- An option in OutlierKit's similar-channels tool that also sorts by subscribers and average views, so the list stays in your weight class.
- Outlier multiplier
- A video's views divided by what its channel usually gets. 200x means the video did 200 times the channel's normal.
Frequently asked questions
What is a YouTube channel watchlist?+
A list of 20 to 30 channels that are like yours in topic and, ideally, in size. You read the titles of their best recent videos side by side, once a week, looking for words or phrases that appear on three or more channels. Those phrases are what viewers in your niche are clicking on right now.
How many channels should be on a watchlist?+
Twenty to thirty. Fewer than ten and a repeating phrase could be coincidence. More than thirty and the weekly read takes too long to keep doing. Twenty is enough to spot a phrase on three channels, which is the threshold that makes it a trend rather than one creator's habit.
Should my watchlist include big channels?+
Mostly no. Big channels get views from subscribers whatever the title says, so their titles tell you less. Match the watchlist to your size, or to the size you will be in a year. OutlierKit's similar-channels tool has a size-matching option for exactly this. A few larger channels are fine as a ceiling reference, but the signal comes from channels your size.
How is a watchlist different from tracking competitors?+
Tracking usually means watching a handful of direct rivals for what they post. A watchlist is wider and is read for patterns, not for individual videos. You are not trying to react to one competitor. You are trying to notice when the whole neighbourhood shifts toward a phrase, which is a stronger signal than anything one channel does.
Do the phrases from a travel watchlist work in other niches?+
The exact phrases travel well because they describe promises, not subjects. Real costs and biggest mistake came from a travel watchlist, but real costs of starting pottery, or the biggest mistake new meditators make, carry the same promise into a different niche. Build your own watchlist to find your niche's phrases, then test the travel ones too.
