YouTube Channel Locked for Spam: You Get 30 Days to Fix It Before Termination

If your notice says “30-day locked period”, YouTube has not terminated your channel yet. You have 30 days to fix or remove the videos it flagged for spam. If you do nothing, YouTube terminates the channel.

YouTube started two kinds of channel lock in October 2026. On October 29 it began testing a 30-day lock for some channels that were about to be terminated for spam. On October 21 it began pausing uploads on channels that show signs of a hack, usually for about a day. You can't upload in either one, so they are easy to mix up. The spam lock needs you to act within 30 days. The hacked-channel pause mostly needs you to wait. Both changes are also listed in our log of every YouTube update in 2026.

What did YouTube change about channel locks?

YouTube added a 30-day lock before some spam terminations, and a short pause for channels that look hacked. Both came from TeamYouTube posts in the YouTube Help Community, and I read both posts directly on November 3.

The first change is the spam lock. In its Feature Experiments post dated October 29, 2026, YouTube says it is “testing a new option for creators facing immediate termination due to certain Spam policy violations.” An eligible channel enters a 30-day locked period. The owner gets an email and a notice in YouTube Studio on desktop. Uploading new videos and posting comments stop working. The post gives three ways out: fix or remove specific videos, remove all videos, or submit an appeal.

The second change is the hacked-channel pause. In a community post published October 21, 2026, YouTube says it will “automatically apply a temporary feature pause if we detect unusual or unauthorized activity on your channel.” A new Help Center article lists what stops and what happens next.

Social Media Today covered the spam test, as did Android Authority on October 30 and Android Headlines on November 2. TubeBuddy's October creator news roundup covered the hacked-channel pause. Where the coverage and YouTube's own words differ, I follow YouTube.

Is your channel in a spam lock or a hacked-channel pause?

The notice tells you which one you have. A spam lock names the Spam policy and a 30-day locked period. A hacked-channel pause shows a banner saying the account is temporarily restricted for security. The table compares the two using only what YouTube has published.

Android Headlines reported that locked channels may appear blank, but YouTube's post does not say that. Android Authority made a narrower point: channels that choose Remove all videos will look empty to subscribers. If your channel looks empty and you deleted nothing, open YouTube Studio and look for a lock notice or a security banner.

What should you do in each of the 30 days?

Act in the first 10 days, then keep the last 10 free for the fallback. YouTube gives you the 30-day window and the three options. It does not give a schedule, and it has not said how long a cleanup review takes. I wrote the plan below around one rule from YouTube: if your cleanup is rejected, you can still remove all videos, but only inside the 30 days.

  1. Step 1 · Day 1

Confirm which lock you have and save the evidence

Read the email and the notice in YouTube Studio on desktop. Make sure it names the Spam policy and a 30-day locked period, not a security pause. Save the email, screenshot the notice, and write down the date. Your deadline is 30 days from that notice. Do not try to upload from a second channel: YouTube's termination rules ban using other channels to get around a termination.

  2. Step 2 · Days 2 to 4

Audit every video against the Spam policy

Export or list every public, unlisted and private video. The Spam policy covers all of them, plus titles, thumbnails, descriptions, comments and links. Mark each video against the policy's examples: mass-produced AI content, scraped or re-posted clips, detection evasion like mirroring or speed changes, misleading titles, and links that send viewers off YouTube to risky sites. Start with your newest uploads and your most viewed ones.

  3. Step 3 · Days 5 to 8

Fix what you can save and delete what you cannot

Use the YouTube Studio tools, including the video editor, to trim scraped segments, rewrite misleading titles and thumbnails, and remove risky links from descriptions. Delete videos that only work as copies of someone else's work. If you are unsure about a video, remove it. A rejected review costs you days you may need later.

  4. Step 4 · Days 9 to 10

Choose between cleanup, removing all videos, or an appeal

If the flagged pattern shows up in a few videos, keep cleaning up. If it runs through the whole library, the Remove all videos option may save more than it costs. If you believe the channel never broke the rules, file an appeal instead. Decide early, so you still have time to switch to another option.

  5. Step 5 · Days 11 to 20

Plan your next videos while the review runs

YouTube has not published how long a cleanup review takes. You cannot upload while the channel is locked, so plan the next 10 videos now. Each one should add something of your own, such as your script, your voice, your research or your editing. The Spam policy and the inauthentic content policy both ask for this kind of original work.

  6. Step 6 · Days 21 to 30

If the review is rejected, use the fallback before day 30

YouTube says that if your manual cleanup review is rejected, you can still choose Remove all videos as long as you are within the 30-day window. That keeps your subscribers, channel handle and YPP status. Failing to act within 30 days, or taking no action, leads to termination. Keep track of the date while you wait for the review.

Two rules from YouTube's own pages also apply. The Spam policy covers unlisted and private videos too, so hiding a video does not fix it. The channel terminations page says a terminated creator may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel, so moving to a backup channel breaks the rules again.

When is “Remove all videos” the right call?

Choose it when the flagged pattern is the channel itself. YouTube's post says the option will “delete all uploaded videos on your channel to immediately unlock it.” If a cleanup review is rejected, you can still pick it within the 30 days, “allowing you to start fresh while keeping your subscribers, channel handle, and YPP status.”

It suits some channels and not others. I would decide based on three questions:

  • Is the problem in most videos or only a few? If every upload uses the same AI voice over the same stock loop, a video-by-video cleanup will not pass. Removing all of them unlocks the channel today instead of waiting for a rejected review on day 18.
  • Where does your income come from? If old videos bring steady search views and ad revenue, deleting them costs real money. Try the cleanup first and keep Remove all videos as the fallback YouTube allows.
  • Can you make different videos next week? Subscribers and YPP status are only worth keeping if your next uploads are original. If the channel makes the same videos again, YouTube can flag it again.

YouTube has not said whether it watches a channel more closely after it removes all videos. I would assume it does and treat your first uploads after an unlock as the ones a reviewer is most likely to check.

Which channels get flagged for spam?

Channels that publish many near-identical videos, or videos built from other people's work, carry the most risk. YouTube has not said which violations qualify for the 30-day lock. But its Spam policy lists the patterns it targets, and three of them match how many faceless and automated channels work:

  • Mass production with automated tools or AI, used “to churn out high volumes of similar content with minimal changes.” YouTube's example is a channel with the same background music and repetitive AI images across many videos, each reading an AI script.
  • Scraped content, meaning material re-posted from other sites or videos without added commentary, education or unique editing.
  • Detection evasion, such as speeding up audio, heavy filters, cropping or mirroring to get past abuse detection.

The same policy also covers engagement manipulation, comment spam, off-platform diversion to risky sites, scams and malicious clickbait. It says AI disclosure “is not a free pass” to break the rules.

A second policy also applies. YouTube's channel monetization policies renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025, to make clear it includes mass-produced and repetitive content. The reused content policy, which covers clips, compilations and reactions, did not change. The monetization policies decide whether you can earn, and the Spam policy decides whether your channel stays up, so a channel can pass one and fail the other.

Being faceless does not get a channel flagged. Publishing many near-identical videos does. We cover the monetization side in why faceless channels get demonetized, the wider enforcement push in YouTube's AI slop crackdown, and the Shorts version in the Shorts original content update. To check your own channel first, run the YouTube channel health check.

How do you avoid the hacked-channel freeze?

Make your Google Account hard to take over, and never run files a sponsor sends you. The freeze is there to protect your channel. YouTube's post explains that hackers try to lock owners out and upload unwanted videos or live streams, which “can quickly lead to account termination.” The pause blocks those uploads while YouTube checks.

While it runs, YouTube's Help Center article says you don't need to take immediate action. Check the channel owner's email. If the review finds no sign of unauthorized access, the limits lift at once. If it confirms a hijack, the limits stay and YouTube emails steps to re-secure the account, undo changes and contact support. The full process is in Recover a hacked YouTube channel, which notes that support covers incidents from the past 9 months.

Four habits lower the risk of a pause:

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification for every Google Account that can manage the channel. YouTube's announcement reminds creators to do this. Google's steps are in Turn on 2-Step Verification.
  2. Add a passkey. Google says passkeys “can't be shared, copied, written down” and give stronger protection against phishing. See Sign in with a passkey.
  3. Never open or run files a sponsor sends you. Google's Threat Analysis Group documented a campaign in 2021 that lured creators with fake collaboration offers, often a demo of antivirus, VPN, photo editing or game software. The download was cookie theft malware. It takes over a signed-in session, so it gets around 2-Step Verification. Google said it blocked 1.6 million messages to targets and restored about 4,000 accounts. Our guide to spotting fake YouTube sponsorships lists the red flags.
  4. Check who has access. The pause applies to the whole channel, so every manager loses the same features. Remove people who no longer work on the channel, and ask the rest to secure their accounts too, as YouTube's recovery guide advises.

YouTube has not said what counts as unusual activity. Signing in from a new country or a new device might be enough. If you travel or hire a new editor, a pause is possible, so avoid scheduling a live stream that can't move by a day.

What has YouTube not said yet?

YouTube's two posts leave these questions open:

  1. Which Spam policy violations make a channel eligible for the 30-day lock.
  2. How many channels are in the test, and in which countries.
  3. How long a cleanup review takes, and whether you can resubmit after a rejection.
  4. Whether the lock leaves anything on the public channel page while it runs.
  5. What signals count as unusual activity for the hacked-channel pause.
  6. The longest a security review can run. YouTube only says “typically within 24 hours.”

How do you rebuild after an unlock?

Make fewer videos, pick topics your audience already wants, and add your own work to each one. A channel that comes out of a spam lock can't go back to posting in volume. Each new video needs to add something a reviewer can see.

I build OutlierKit for this step. It finds the videos in your niche that beat their channel's usual views by a wide margin, so your next video starts from a topic that has already worked. Use those outliers as a brief, then add the script, research and editing that make the video yours. The manual method is in how to find outlier videos.

Frequently asked questions

What is the YouTube 30-day channel lock?

It is a test YouTube announced on October 29, 2026. Some channels that would be terminated right away for certain Spam policy violations now enter a 30-day locked period instead. During the lock you cannot upload new videos or post comments. You can fix or remove the violating videos, remove all videos, or appeal. If you do nothing within 30 days, the channel is terminated.

Which spam violations qualify for the 30-day lock?

YouTube has not said. Its post only says the test covers creators facing immediate termination due to certain Spam policy violations, and that eligible channels get the lock. It does not list the violations, the eligibility rules, the regions in the test, or how many channels are in it.

Does Remove all videos keep my subscribers and monetization?

Yes, according to YouTube. Removing all uploaded videos unlocks the channel immediately. If a manual cleanup review is rejected, you can still choose this option within the 30-day window, and YouTube says it lets you start fresh while keeping your subscribers, channel handle and YPP status. Your old videos and their view history are gone.

Why does my locked channel look blank?

YouTube's post does not say a locked channel looks blank. Android Headlines reported that locked channels may appear blank. Android Authority noted that channels which choose to remove all videos will show up empty for subscribers. If your channel looks empty and you did not delete anything, check YouTube Studio for a lock notice or a security banner.

Why can't I upload to YouTube even though my channel was not hacked?

Since October 21, 2026, YouTube pauses some features automatically when it detects unusual activity that might be unauthorized. The pause applies to everyone on the channel, including the real owner. A security review typically ends within 24 hours. If YouTube finds no evidence of unauthorized access, it lifts the limits right away. You do not need to take action while the review runs.

Does the hacked-channel pause affect monetization?

YouTube's community post says your monetization status will not be impacted and viewers can keep watching your existing videos. The Help Center article adds that YouTube may set some of your recent videos to private during the review.

Can I appeal instead of deleting videos?

Yes. Submitting an appeal is the third option in YouTube's post. Use it if you believe a mistake was made and your channel follows the policies. The 30-day clock still applies, so file it early.

Does 2-Step Verification stop YouTube channel hacks?

It helps, and YouTube tells creators to turn it on, but it does not stop every hack. Google's Threat Analysis Group found attackers using fake sponsorship offers to deliver cookie theft malware, which steals a signed-in session instead of a password. Passkeys resist phishing, but the main defense against cookie theft is never running files a sponsor sends you.

Sources and method

I read both TeamYouTube posts and every YouTube and Google help page listed here on November 3, 2026. Quotes come from those pages. Where news coverage differed from YouTube's wording, such as a fixed 24-hour freeze or a blank locked channel, I followed YouTube and noted the difference. The 30-day plan is my own suggestion; YouTube sets the window and the options, not the schedule.
