Creator Bonus Programs 2026: YouTube, X and Instagram Compared
YouTube, X and Instagram all launched creator bonus offers in October 2026. X offered $3,000 for 15 short videos. YouTube started paying invited creators a Shorts bonus for hitting a monthly upload quota. Instagram offered some YouTubers six figures to post their long videos there too.
X's deal paid the most per video and asked the least, but enrollment is closed. YouTube's Shorts bonus is worth taking if you can hit the quota by clipping your own long videos, because YouTube cut reach for low-effort Shorts on October 1. Instagram's offers go only to large channels it picks.
How do the YouTube, X and Instagram bonus programs compare?
All three are invite-only, and none lets you apply. YouTube pays partly on views, X paid a flat fee, and Instagram pays for long videos instead of short ones.

X rebuilt its creator pay in August, and YouTube tightened its Shorts rules on October 1. All three platforms then launched offers within two weeks of each other.
Dates: X announced Original Content Rewards on August 7 and revenue sharing stopped earning on September 7. YouTube posted its original content change on October 1. X announced Video Kickstart on October 15. The YouTube bonus was reported on October 16. YouTube's $20 payout test was reported on October 28, Instagram's offers on October 29, and Video Kickstart enrollment closed on October 30. Sources are linked in each section below.
What is the YouTube Shorts bonus program?
The YouTube Shorts bonus program pays invited Partner Program creators for posting Shorts on a steady schedule. Rene Ritchie announced it on Creator Insider, and Music Ally quoted his pitch: “What if you could get paid a bonus just for keeping your Shorts schedule consistent?” Net Influencer reported the pilot on October 16 and placed it in the US, UK, Germany, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
YouTube's help page for the program says the payment has two parts:
- A minimum payment for uploading at least the number of public Shorts named in your invitation, in each calendar month.
- A monthly bonus based on valid, engaged Shorts views. It grows with views and depends on typical earnings in your country. The page says you are not guaranteed to get it.
The help page also sets these rules:
- Accept the invite by the 15th, or that month does not count.
- You must still be monetized at the end of the month to be paid.
- Views from ads do not count. Only organic views do.
- Payment lands in AdSense between the 21st and 26th of the next month.
- YouTube can end the program with 30 days' notice, or at once for legal or abuse reasons.
Is the upload target 16 Shorts a month?
YouTube has not published an official target. The help page says the number is in each invitation. The figure of 16 comes from one invited creator. Social Media Today reported it as at least one example, shared by a user named Muaaz on X. It is one data point, and it may not apply to you. I use it below as a planning number because it is the only public figure.
What is X's Video Kickstart bonus?
X's Video Kickstart paid invited creators a flat $3,000 to post 15 vertical videos. X's Allegra Jacchia announced it on October 15, and Digit laid out the rules:
- At least 15 vertical videos, each under 3 minutes.
- Posted on 15 different days inside a 30 day window.
- No view or engagement target. The $3,000 does not depend on views.
- You must have made the content. Commentary on other material can count if it adds real value. Videos posted elsewhere count if they carry no watermark.
- Invite-only. Enrollment closed on October 30, 2026.
- Taking part was a fast track into Original Content Rewards.
The deal worked out to $200 per video with no view target. A creator who already makes vertical videos for YouTube or TikTok got paid for work they were doing anyway. If you missed it, the ongoing option on X is Original Content Rewards.
What replaced X's revenue sharing?
Original Content Rewards replaced Creator Revenue Sharing. Per GIGAZINE's report, X announced it on August 7, 2026. Revenue sharing stopped earning on September 7, and former members could apply from September 8. It pays every two weeks on valid impressions from Premium users. To qualify you need X Premium, more than 500 verified followers, and more than 500,000 verified home timeline impressions in the last 90 days. Video Kickstart had no such requirements.
What is Instagram offering YouTubers?
Instagram is offering selected YouTubers cash to post their long videos to Features, its new horizontal format for videos up to 90 minutes. Business Insider reported on October 29 that offers start at $50,000 and reach $500,000. Dexerto's summary adds that the deals do not ask creators to leave YouTube. The reported condition is posting the same episode to Instagram the day it goes live on YouTube. It is not clear if the money is per video, per month or one time.
This one is for large channels that Instagram picks, so most readers will not see an offer. I cover the deal in full in why Instagram is paying YouTubers to post long videos.
Why can a Shorts upload quota hurt your reach?
A quota rewards volume, and YouTube just started cutting reach for the cheapest kind of volume. On October 1, YouTube posted Prioritizing original content on Shorts. Per PPC Land's report on the post, YouTube will reduce reach for “content re-uploaded from other creators”. Channels found to be “primarily aggregating or re-uploading other creators' videos without significant changes” will likely see less distribution. YouTube also warned against “minor technical edits or template-based changes simply to alter a video.” 9to5Google covered it on October 2 and noted that YouTube drew no clear line.
Say you have 16 Shorts to post this month and only eight good ideas. The easy way to fill the gap is a re-post, a trending clip or a template edit. YouTube now shows that kind of content to fewer people.
The bonus part of the pay depends on views, and YouTube counts only valid, engaged, organic views. Filler that loses reach still counts toward the minimum, but it shrinks the bonus. If YouTube reads your channel as mostly aggregation, your good Shorts can lose reach too.
The 2027 rules add a second risk. From February 1, 2027, partners need 10 million qualified Shorts views every 90 days to keep earning Shorts revenue. I break that down in the 2027 Partner Program changes. Filler that earns a small bonus one month can make that floor harder to reach. The full detail on the October 1 change is in YouTube Shorts now favor original content.
Do Shorts cut from your own long videos count as original?
YouTube has not said so directly, but the October 1 post does not target them. Every line it published is about content from other creators: re-uploads, aggregation, and edits made to disguise someone else's video. PPC Land checked both the post and Rene Ritchie's video and found that neither addresses channels that cut Shorts from their own long videos. 9to5Google reached the same gap.
My reading is that a Short cut from your own video is your own content, so the change does not cover it. I would still add something to each clip, because YouTube has drawn no line and a plain crop is the kind of edit it called minor. Clips can also do well on Shorts. On November 3, I searched the OutlierKit index for Shorts whose description sends viewers to the creator's own full video, then pulled each one. Two small channels had clips that beat their usual views by a wide margin:
| Short | Channel (subscribers) | Length | Views | Vs recent average | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I Found THIS in the Recent Tab… | CyroPeng (1,550) | 0:31 | 2,410 | 15.2x | “Full video on my channel” |
| The hardest Challenge in The Finals... | BrainZ (4,390) | 0:17 | 2,399 | 10.8x | “Watch the full length video on my channel now!” |
CyroPeng's 31 second clip got 2,410 views, 15.2 times the channel's recent average. BrainZ's 17 second clip got 2,399 views, 10.8 times its recent average. Two examples prove nothing about averages, and I cannot tell if either channel is in the Partner Program. They do show a format that works: a short, self-contained moment from a longer video, with a line that sends viewers to the full version. For the reverse direction, see how to turn Shorts viewers into long-form viewers.
How do you post 16 Shorts a month from your long videos?
Cut four clips from each long video and post one long video a week. That gives you 16 Shorts a month with no new filming and no filler. If you post twice a month, you need eight clips per video, which only works for long podcasts or streams.
- Count your long videos first. Divide the target by your monthly long uploads. Sixteen Shorts from four long videos is four clips each. From two long videos it is eight each, which is a lot to cut from one video.
- Pick moments that make sense alone. A good clip has its own setup and payoff inside 60 seconds. A clip that needs the five minutes before it will not hold a Shorts viewer.
- Rewrite the first two seconds. Open on the line that creates the question, not on the line where the moment started in the long video. Add a short text hook on screen.
- Add something a plain crop cannot. Add a voiceover, a caption that gives context, or a cut that tells the story faster. I do this as a safety margin, since YouTube has not said your own clips need it.
- Spread uploads across the month. The YouTube target counts per calendar month. X counted distinct days. Four a week is easier to keep than sixteen in the last week.
- Point each Short back to the source. Link the full video. A Short that sends viewers to the long version brings you Shorts views for the bonus and watch time on the long video.
Shorts usually earn far less per view than long videos, which makes the bonus the main reason to post more of them. Our YouTube RPM benchmarks show how wide that gap runs by niche.
What happened to Instagram's Reels bonus?
Meta shrank it, then shut it down. Meta launched Reels Play bonuses in 2021 to pull creators toward short video. Payouts once ranged from $600 to $35,000. Creators later told the Financial Times that payments fell by as much as 70% and view targets rose. One said the $35,000 tier went from 58 million to 359 million monthly views.
On March 10, 2023, Meta stopped Reels bonuses for all Facebook creators and for US Instagram creators. Mark Zuckerberg had said the “monetization efficiency of Reels is much less than Feed.” Instagram head Adam Mosseri later told creators Instagram “couldn't afford to run” the program in the US, per Tubefilter. Since then it has run short invite-only tests, like a spring 2024 bonus in the US, Japan and South Korea capped at $30,000 per creator over 30 days.
Platforms pay these bonuses while they need more content, then raise the targets or end the program. YouTube's terms already let it end the Shorts bonus with 30 days' notice. Take the money, but plan your uploads around content that would still earn if the bonus stopped. Our guide to making money on YouTube without monetization covers income that does not depend on a platform fund.
Which creator bonus is worth taking?
Take the YouTube Shorts bonus if you already publish long videos weekly. Skip it, or accept and treat the minimum as the whole payment, if hitting the quota means making filler. My advice for each type of channel:
- If you post long videos weekly, accept the YouTube invite. Four clips per video covers a 16 Short target with no new filming.
- If you post only Shorts and write each one, accept if the target is near your current pace. Do not double your output for it.
- If you run a clip or compilation channel, fix originality first. The bonus pays on engaged views, and the October 1 change cuts those for your channel.
- If you already post vertical video, watch for the next X pilot. $200 a video with no view target was the best rate of the three.
- If you run a large long-form channel and Instagram calls, consider it. The reported deals ask only for a same-day upload, which I think is a fair trade to test.
YouTube is also testing a $20 payout threshold, down from $100, for a random group of partners in the US, India and Indonesia, Tubefilter reported on October 28. Bonus money lands in the same AdSense balance, so small bonuses could reach you faster if you are in the test.
How OutlierKit helps you pick which moments to clip
Choosing which 16 moments will hold a stranger's attention takes more work than cutting them. I build OutlierKit to answer that. Search your topic and it shows the Shorts and long videos in your niche that got several times their channel's usual views, from channels your size. That tells you which questions and hooks viewers already chose.
Then go back through your long videos for the moments that match. Your clips start from topics with proof behind them, so the bonus views come from Shorts that perform, and your next video performs too. The manual method is in how to find outlier videos.
Frequently asked questions
What is the YouTube Shorts bonus program?
It is an invite-only pilot that pays Partner Program creators for posting Shorts on a schedule. You get a minimum payment for uploading a set number of public Shorts each month, plus a possible bonus based on valid, engaged Shorts views. Reports place the test in the US, UK, Germany, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
How many Shorts do you need to post for the YouTube bonus?
YouTube has not published a number. The target is set in each creator's invitation. One invited creator shared a target of 16 Shorts a month, as reported by Social Media Today, but YouTube has not confirmed that this applies to anyone else.
Can I apply for the YouTube Shorts bonus?
No. YouTube's help page says the program is invite-only and there is no application process. Invitations arrive by email or as a notification in YouTube Studio. Creator Support cannot add you.
How much does X pay for Video Kickstart?
X offered invited creators a flat $3,000 for posting 15 vertical videos under 3 minutes on 15 different days within 30 days. The payment did not depend on views. That works out to $200 per video. Enrollment closed on October 30, 2026.
What replaced X's Creator Revenue Sharing?
X replaced it with Original Content Rewards, announced on August 7, 2026. Revenue sharing stopped earning on September 7, and former members could apply to the new program from September 8. It needs X Premium, more than 500 verified followers and more than 500,000 verified home timeline impressions in 90 days.
Do Shorts cut from my own long videos count as unoriginal?
YouTube's October 2026 post cuts reach for content re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything. It does not mention Shorts cut from your own long videos. My reading is that your own clips are not the target, but YouTube has not said so directly.
Is Instagram still paying a Reels bonus?
No. Meta stopped its Reels Play bonus for US Instagram creators in March 2023. Instagram has since run short, invite-only bonuses, such as a spring 2024 test in the US, Japan and South Korea capped at $30,000 per creator.
Sources and method
I read every source above on November 3, 2026. The clip examples come from the OutlierKit API on the same day: one outlier search for Shorts that link to the creator's own full video, then a lookup of each result. “Vs recent average” is views divided by the channel's recent average. The 16 Shorts target is one creator's invitation, not a YouTube figure.
