YouTube thumbnail size: the files YouTube stores for each video

YouTube recommends uploading your own thumbnail at 3840 x 2160 pixels. That is a 16:9 shape, and YouTube asks for an image at least 640 pixels wide. YouTube then makes copies from your upload at fixed sizes, the largest 1280 x 720. Each copy has its own file name at the same public address.

A 16:9 thumbnail doesn't fill a 4:3 file. YouTube adds black bars above and below it to make up the space. Skip those files for design work. The two 16:9 files show the thumbnail with no bars.

The 1280 x 720 file is the one most people want. It is the HD version, and it is sharp enough for a slide or a design file. YouTube only keeps it when the uploader's image was at least 1280 pixels wide. So a small upload has no HD file at all.

How this YouTube thumbnail downloader gets the HD file from a URL

Every public video has an ID of 11 characters. YouTube builds each thumbnail address from that ID and a file name. So the tool only needs the ID. It reads the ID from the link you paste, in your browser.

The one video mode accepts every common link type:

• A watch link, such as youtube.com/watch?v= plus the ID.
• A youtu.be short link.
• A Shorts, live or embed link.
• A bare video ID of 11 characters.
• A thumbnail image address from i.ytimg.com, if that is all you have.

Your link never reaches our server in this mode. The images load straight from i.ytimg.com, which is YouTube's image host. The download button fetches the same file and saves it as a JPG. Some browsers block that fetch. The tool then opens the image in a new tab, and you can save it by hand.

YouTube answers a request for a missing size with a small grey placeholder. Many thumbnail grabber tools pass that placeholder along as if it were real. This one checks the width of each image it loads. A missing size gets a plain message, and its download button turns off.

The ZIP holds the largest 16:9 file each video has. That is the 1280 x 720 file when it exists and the 320 x 180 file when it doesn't. Two videos with the same title both stay in the ZIP. The tool adds the video ID to the second file name. Each visitor gets 30 channel lookups an hour, and the one video mode has no limit.

   Choose "One video" for a single thumbnail in every size. Choose "A whole channel" to see a channel's latest 15 thumbnails in one grid.

   For a video, paste a watch, Shorts, youtu.be, live or embed link. A bare video ID works too. For a channel, paste the channel URL, the @handle, the UC ID or one of its video links.

   The tool shows all 5 files with their pixel sizes. If YouTube has no 1280 x 720 file for the video, the card says so. Take the next size down in that case.

YouTube Shorts thumbnail downloader: what a Shorts link returns

A Shorts link works in the one video mode like any other link. You get the same set of files and the same download buttons. Most Shorts use a frame from the video as the thumbnail. So you usually download a still from the Short, and no designed image exists.

The channel mode puts long-form videos first for that reason. A grid of video frames teaches you little about packaging. If you study a Shorts channel, paste its handle anyway. The tool finds no long-form uploads and lists the Shorts.
