Short answer
A YouTube description generator turns your notes into a description you can paste into YouTube Studio. This one builds six parts in order: an opening, what the video covers, chapters, links, a closing line and hashtags. It checks the result as you type. The opening should fill the first 150 characters that viewers see. The whole description should run 500 characters or more and stay under YouTube's 5000-character limit. Chapters must start at 0:00, with at least 3 in rising order. The generator runs in your browser, with no login and no run limit.
What this YouTube description generator builds
You fill in seven short boxes. The generator lays them out as one description and updates it with every keystroke. An empty box leaves nothing behind, so a short video gets a short description with no empty headings.
- Your opening goes first, exactly as you wrote it.
- Your points become a short list under "In this video".
- Your timestamps become a clean chapter list. The generator tidies the format, so (1:05) - Setup becomes 1:05 Setup.
- Links, your closing line and up to 3 hashtags finish it.
Next to the text you see what a viewer sees before they click more. Under that sit the checks. Each one shows green, amber or red, with one sentence on what to change.
The generator does not write sentences for you. I think that is the right split for a free page. You know what your video delivers, and the opening has to be true. The layout and the rules are the parts worth handing off.
The YouTube description template this generator follows
A good description puts the selling line first and the housekeeping last. The table lists the six parts in the order the generator writes them.
| Part | What goes in it | Rule the generator checks |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | What the viewer gets, with your keyword once | Fills the first 150 characters |
| In this video | Three to five points the video covers | None. It adds length that means something. |
| Chapters | One timestamp and label per line | Starts at 0:00, at least 3, each 10 seconds or longer |
| Links | One link per line, each with a label | At least one link |
| Closing line | One ask, such as subscribe | None |
| Hashtags | Up to 3, on the last line | YouTube shows the first 3 above the title |
The total should reach 500 characters. YouTube stops accepting text at 5000. Most descriptions land well short of that.
For worked examples by video type, read our YouTube description template guide. It has full templates you can adapt and paste into the boxes above.
YouTube video description: the first 150 characters
Most viewers never open the full description. They see about 150 characters, then the word more. YouTube shows the same text under your title in search results. So the opening does two jobs. It tells a viewer why to watch, and it tells YouTube what the video is about.
| Opening | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Meal prep for beginners: five lunches in one hour for about $20, step by step. | Strong | Keyword first, then a clear result |
| Hey guys, welcome back to the channel! | Weak | It says nothing about this video |
| Subscribe: link. Instagram: link. Gear: link. | Weak | Links fill the only part viewers read |
| In this video I talk about some food ideas. | Weak | No keyword and no result |
Use your keyword once, near the start, in a normal sentence. Repeating it five times reads as spam to a viewer. Not sure which phrase to use? Our YouTube keyword research guide shows how to pick one, and the YouTube SEO guide covers where else it belongs.
The opening makes a promise. The first seconds of the video have to keep it, or viewers leave. Our guide to YouTube hooks and retention covers that half.
YouTube timestamp generator rules for chapters
Chapters split the progress bar into labelled parts. YouTube builds them from the timestamps in your description, but only when the list follows three rules. Break one and no chapters appear at all.
| Rule | Passes | Fails |
|---|---|---|
| The first timestamp is 0:00 | 0:00 Intro | 0:05 Intro |
| At least 3 timestamps, in rising order | 0:00, 1:10, 3:25 | 0:00, 3:25, 1:10 |
| Each chapter runs 10 seconds or more | 0:00, 0:45, 2:00 | 0:00, 0:04, 2:00 |
Paste your timestamps into the Chapters box in any common format. The generator rewrites them cleanly and names the rule a list breaks. It cannot find the timestamps for you. Those come from your edit.
Label each chapter with what the viewer learns in it. "The $20 shopping list" beats "Part 2". The easy way to get good labels is to plan them before you film. Our guide to YouTube script writing shows how to outline a video so the chapters fall out of the script.
How to write a YouTube description with the generator
Five steps take you from an empty box to a description you can paste. Press Load an example first if you want to see a finished one.
- 01
Type your main keyword
This is the phrase you want the video to show up for, such as meal prep for beginners. It is optional. With a keyword, the generator checks that the phrase sits in your opening. - 02
Say what the video delivers
Write one to three sentences. This becomes your opening. Viewers see about the first 150 characters before they click more, so say what they get and use your keyword once. - 03
Add what the video covers, and your chapters
List the main points, one per line. Then paste your timestamps, one per line, starting at 0:00. The generator checks them against YouTube's chapter rules and tells you what to fix. - 04
Add links, a closing line and hashtags
Put each link on its own line with a label. Write one closing line that asks for one thing. Add up to 3 hashtags, or leave the box empty and the generator makes one from your keyword. - 05
Read the checks, then copy
Each check shows green, amber or red with one sentence on what to change. Fix the red ones. Then press Copy description and paste it into YouTube Studio.
The description is one of three boxes you fill at upload. For the title, the title generator inside OutlierKit grounds each option in real outlier videos.

Frequently asked questions
What is a YouTube description generator?
A YouTube description generator turns what you know about a video into a description you can paste into YouTube Studio. This one takes your notes and lays them out in six parts: the opening, what the video covers, chapters, links, a closing line and hashtags. It checks each part against YouTube's limits as you type.
Is this YouTube description generator free?
Yes. You need no login, no API key and no card. It has no run limit, because it works in your browser. Your notes never leave your machine.
How long should a YouTube description be?
Aim for 500 characters or more. Under 150 characters, YouTube has almost nothing to read. YouTube's upper limit is 5000 characters. The generator shows a live count and flags a description that is too thin or too long.
What should the first line of a YouTube description say?
It should say what the viewer gets from the video, and it should use your main keyword once. Viewers see about the first 150 characters before they click more. YouTube also shows that text under your title in search results. Leave links and subscribe asks for further down.
How do I add chapters to a YouTube description?
Write one timestamp per line with a label, such as 0:00 Intro. The first one must be 0:00. You need at least 3 chapters in rising order, and each one must run at least 10 seconds. Paste your timestamps into the Chapters box and the generator checks all three rules.
How many hashtags should I put in a YouTube description?
Up to 3 is the useful number. YouTube shows the first 3 above your title as links. Above 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video. The generator places yours on the last line.
Does the description generator use AI?
No. This page does not write sentences for you. It arranges and checks what you type, so every claim in the description is yours. The description generator inside OutlierKit writes the description and hashtags for you.
Do YouTube descriptions help a video rank?
They help YouTube understand the video. A clear description tells YouTube what the video covers, and the opening shows in search results. A description cannot fix a title nobody clicks or a video nobody finishes. Treat it as ten minutes of careful setup.
Should I put links at the top of a YouTube description?
Put them below the opening. The first 150 characters are the only part most viewers read, so use them to sell the video. An exception is a video that exists to send people to one link, such as a product launch. Then one short link in the opening is fair.
Can I reuse the same description on every video?
Reuse the bottom half. Your links, your closing line and your channel hashtags can stay the same on every upload. Write a new opening and a new list of points for each video. A copied opening tells YouTube and the viewer nothing about this video.
Does it work for YouTube Shorts?
Yes. A Short needs less. Write one or two sentences, skip the chapters and add your hashtags. The length check will show amber, and that is fine for a Short.
Where do I paste the description?
In YouTube Studio, open the video and paste it into the Description box on the Details page. Chapters appear on the video once YouTube processes the timestamps. That can take a few minutes.
