Positioning

The vlogs beating their channel averages are not daily vlogs. They are milestones: first month, one year, first week in the apartment, the day I decided to leave. Each one names a place and a gap between what the vlogger expected and what happened. That gap is what a stranger clicks on; the daily routine is what a subscriber watches.

The multiples are biggest on the smallest channels: 46x on 2,140 subscribers, 16.7x on 699, 9.6x on 243. A vlogger with no audience yet has the same access to these titles as one with 140,000, which is why your first ten videos are milestones, not days.

The place is the search, the gap is the click

Every outlier below names a country or city. Search brings the viewer who is planning the same move; the not-what-I-expected frame makes them click your video over the tourism board's. Keep both in every title until the channel has a subscriber base that watches for you rather than for the place.

The evidence

Outlier vlogs from channels of every size, pulled from OutlierKit

Each x is how far the video beat its own channel's normal views. Three of the thirteen come from channels under 1,000 subscribers, the proof that the milestone format pulls cold viewers.

LIVING in Vietnam Was NOT What I Expected!

DemiDoesIt · 8.1K subs · 168K views · Apr 2026

Living in a named country plus not what I expected. 16.8x on 8,120 subscribers; the gap between expectation and reality is the story, and the country is the search.

One Year in Denmark - Not What I Expected

The Joana Alves · 2.1K subs · 51.7K views · Nov 2023

One year, a named country, not what I expected. 46.2x on 2,140 subscribers and still pulling views three years later; the anniversary is a slot.

The patterns behind these numbers
  • Milestone beats day. First month, one year, first week, first home: a milestone gives a stranger a reason to start here.
  • Name the place. Vietnam, Denmark, Sweden, Austin, Greece, London: the place is what gets typed into search.
  • Expectation versus reality is the hook. Not what I expected, what I got wrong, was a nightmare: honesty outperforms highlights.
  • Name the viewer. Americans moving abroad, expat on a budget: the audience in the title raises the multiple.
  • The decision is a video. Why I'm moving out of the country did 9.1x before a single move-day vlog was filmed.

How to sequence this

Film ideas one to three from footage you already have; they rank on the place and give the channel its first baseline. Four to seven go out one a week. Eight and nine are month two. Ten is an annual slot: publish it on the anniversary of the move and refresh it every year. Every video carries the place and the milestone in the title, and a 45-second Short of the single most surprising moment with the long video pinned.
